On March 27, 2025, the Federal Secretariat Hall in Makurdi, Benue State, witnessed the launch of the “Her Seat in Parliament” campaign, aimed at advocating for increased women’s representation in Nigeria’s legislative bodies. Organized by the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (Nilowv) Benue State chapter, in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the Initiative for Human Rights and Gender Awareness, the event highlighted the urgent need for gender equality in political representation.
The campaign centers around the “74 Seats in Parliament” bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, RT Hon Benjamin Kalu. This bill seeks to reserve 74 seats specifically for women in both national and state assemblies, ensuring their participation in policymaking processes.
Key speakers at the event included Mrs. Ruth Kpengwa, Chairperson of NILOWV, who emphasized the need for collective advocacy across all 23 local government areas to support the bill. Mrs. Bridget Ikyado, a representative of the Governor, praised the initiative and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to empowering women in decision-making roles.
Mrs. Elizabeth Achagh, NAWOJ Chairperson, addressed the ongoing marginalization of women in leadership, calling the campaign a critical opportunity for change. Former legislator Hon. Mrs. Dewua urged women to unite in their support for the bill, drawing from her experiences in office.
Despite the enthusiasm, challenges remain, including misinformation and economic barriers that hinder women’s participation in advocacy. The campaign aims to address these issues and mobilize grassroots support for the passage of the bill.
The launch marks a pivotal step toward achieving gender equality in Nigeria’s political landscape, as advocates work collaboratively to amplify women’s voices in governance.
